About the studio

Based in Prague, Micanse Bordados & CO is a small embroidery studio run by Miriam Candelas Serra.

  • Slow business - Micanseโ€™s studio proposes unique and small productions, where each artwork is carefully desinged and hand stitched.

  • Eco-friendly - most of the materials used are upcycled. Whenever possible, natural fibers and biodegradable materials are chosen.

  • Engaged - Micanseโ€™s designs aim to spread feminism and social rights messages.

โ€œOnce I start embroidering, it is very hard to stop. I love the rhythm and sounds it makes while the needle passes through the fabric or wood. It is like going into trance.โ€

Materials

Sustainability and reducing waste are core values of Micanseโ€™s studio. A lot of attention is made to use the minimum resources and to upcycle materials.

Most of the threads and yarns that I use come from second hand shops and flea markets. As support, I mainly use fabric scraps. I also repurpuse old curtains or jeans.

Textile embroideries

โ€œI love the challenge of creating with limited resources, finding the best combinations to give a second life to reclaimed materials. โ€

I use wood veneer from different kind of woods. They are leftovers from the preparation of wood boards.

Wood embroideries

โ€œCompared to embroider on fabric, with wood you need to be very careful and concentrate, because the support is fragile and doesnโ€™t allow any mistakeโ€

Short BIO

โ€œI love the endless possibilities of embroidery, mixing threads and yarns in different supports to create interesting textures and color patterns.โ€

I was born and raised in Spain. I studied biology and specialized in Neuroscience, pursuing my studies in France. In 2018 life brought me to Prague, where I has founded my studio.

Creativity has always accompanied me, from learning how to knit with my grandma to learning sewing during my studies. When I recently started an online initial embroidery course I instantly fell in love. Since that moment, I have kept learning and experimenting until I recently decided to start sharing my work and establish a studio.
